PDP and Practical- year 1- first project HND

This section is about different visits and how I felt about it,
It will also be about research I am doing on books and art journals, I will also be reflecting on my days on this course.

9th September 2013
Today was the first day where we learned about what the course will be about and what kind of things we will be doing. We had different tasks set for us which got us all thinking and I found these quite interesting but challenging.

10th September 2013
This was the second day of the course and we was made to think about the deeper meaning to art, we was questioned about what is drawing? Is art a lie? Is there such thing as right and wrong? Are dreams real?, is it an imagination. This helped me look at artwork in a different way and I now think more into the work and I can understand it more.
This is an image about what we had to think about today, I got confused but the more I think about it, the more I get to understand it all.

11th September 2013
Today I went to the Tate Liverpool to see the Chagall exhibition which I found very interesting and his work links with what I am learning about at the moment, which is 'what is drawing' is it real? Is it a lie?
His work is very unrealistic and dream like. He uses line and shape to make up his pieces of work and he has story's to tell with in them, such as story's about a Jewish wedding.

16th September 2013

This is an image that shows what I have been doing today,
First we had a discussion about artists and then we went off to do research on the artists so we had a better understanding. The second part of the day was more practical work. First i felt our heartbeat and we drew the lines of the rhythm that I could feel, I used graphite for this and I added tone to it. Then I jogged on the spot to get my heart rate up and I felt my pulse and did the same thing and drew the rhythm I could feel. After that I walked around in a circle and drew the rhythm/pattern I was walking, I did this again but this time I walked faster and the lines seemed to change, I did the same thing again by walking faster and then I went round in a circle again and after every step I took I made a mark.
After doing that I thought of an image that I thought related to the word brain, the image I thought of was 'lightbulb'
I then thought of an action to go with it which I then drew onto paper. Lastly I mixed all of these together on a sheet of A1 paper by creating a composition. I used pencil, graphite and charcoal, I also ripped the paper in a line using scissors to show other ways of mark making. I feel that I have acheived a lot today by researching artists and learning different ways of making marks.

17th September 2013

I have then continued to add media and material onto this piece of work, I have tried to create contrast between light and dark by using charcoal, chalk and paint. I have also attached pieces on material onto it and I have used different techniques to apply the media I have used , such as splashing on the paint,
Putting water on the paper and then letting paint run onto it, I have also used dry brush affect. I feel that I have least a lot about composition and that I need to think about what I am doing and where I am putting things before I do it to make sure it looks as good as it can be.

I have also started to create different compositions in my book so that I can get a better Idea of what I can do for my big piece of work and I can work out which media I want to use.

18th September 2013
I have started my big piece by sticking 4 pieces of A1 paper together, I have chosen one of the small compositions that I created in my book and I drew it onto the paper and I added a few more things into it by taking aspects of the other compositions I drew out.

I have also taken my other piece of work and drew it into my book, I have changed it slightly and I did this three times, I then went into the print room and did mono prints of these images, I have found out different ways to mono print, I tried it using black ink and also white ink, I experimented with different paper and different tools to draw with.

19th September 2013

I have now finished my big tonal mixed media piece, this was based on the tasks I did on Monday which we're drawing the rhythm of my heartbeat, ect.
I have used materials such is paper, cardboard, shoe laces and pennies, the media I used was charcoal and chalk, paint and fine liner, I used different techniques to make marks as this will link to the project, I printed my shoe onto the paper after standing on crushed charcoal, I printed using my finger, I also printed using pennies and ridged part of the cardboard. Other techniques I used was layering paint, using a dry brush and paint, I let paint run from the top of the paper to the bottom, I wet the paper and then let ink run onto it, I also splashed the paper with ink and paint. I feel like this piece of work has been a success because I have experimented with mark making as well as media and tone, I have also tried to add non traditional materials into it to add interest and make it look different.

22nd September 2013

I have watched a talk on YouTube about Robert Rauschenberg and John cage, the man that was talking about them was comparing the two artists and saying they they linked with eachother because they both create work that makes people think about things that people wouldn't usually take notice in, such as john cages piece of music which was called 4.33
Which was 4minutes and 33 seconds of rest which makes us imagine the reaction of the people watching the performance, they are made to look around and pay more attention to the less important things rather than looking at the pianist performing the music. I understand this and think it's a clever way of working.

23rd September 2013

I created one more composition but on an A1 piece of paper, I have done the same thing on this as I did on my big piece, I used different media such as charcoal, chalk, graphite and paint, this time I didn't add materials onto it. I used to same techniques aswell.

24th September 2013
Iv worked on a piece of work that wasn't finished , I added more media onto it to fill up the space, I have layered paint ontop of it aswell and I have also used a couple of colours in it but blended them in so that it mixes with the work rather than stands out as a colour.
I feel that this piece of work is coming together now and I can see where it's going where as this morning I felt a bit lost in what I was doing.
This is a close up image I took of the work to show the layering I did and what colours I have been using properly.

25th September 2013
I then created more compositions that I then took into print and I did more mini printing like I did last week, but this time I changed compositions by using lines that I have took from all of the work I have created recently and I have also used blue aswell as black to make it more interesting

26th September 2013

I have created these two compositions, I have tried to make the top one look busy and I have layered media ontop of eachother, I have used different tones in this piece which I feel has worked successfully.
I am planning on adding more to the bottom composition such as charcoal and more paint, hopefully this will work and look successful as well.

30th September 2013

I have been creating more compositions in my book by choosing an aspect of my work that I think is most successful, I have used charcoal, child and paint for this and I have also added colour into it. I have layered the media and lines because I think this is a technique that works well in my work aswell.

This is the work I did in life class, I have chosen shapes from the body and layered them on top of eachother and I have used the same media and techniques as I have been using in other work so that I can link them together. I like the layered technique and I think it works well with the contrast in tone.

1st October 2013

I experimented with different compositions using the aspects I liked the most and which worked well, I have tried these compositions in a square shape. Again I have used the same techniques and media, paint charcoal and chalk.

I have also created different compositions and I have concentrated more on pictorial space, instead of making my work look busy, I wanted to experiment with different possibilities.

2nd October 2013

I have been experimenting with prints and just seeing which techniques work and which doesn't, this is a plastic sheet that I took a print from which didn't turn out successful.

This is another print I did but using a different technique, I have used a circle template to create the dark spot in the middle. I feel that this looks like it has a spacey affect which links to the project.

I have also created these compositions in a small version of what I did yesterday and I added colour to see if they would look successful, so I can start bigger versions.

3rd October 2013

I did a bigger scale piece of work and I have recreated a piece of work that I have recently painted, which was just in tone, this time I have added one colour to each piece to add more interest and I think it works well.

6th October 2013
Today I have read two different articles.

This one was by 'Andrew Marr' he wrote this about himself, it tells us about how he recovered from a stroke and it inspired him to create more artwork and he felt that he couldn't waste time as he realised that life was short. He says that drawing had been apart of him since he was very young and he went to yearly exhibitions with his family. He linked artwork with fishing as he always went fishing with his dad when he was young, he has learnt that some days you will be dissapointed with work and some days you will be happy with it, just like when you go fishing, some days you don't catch anything and other days can be successful.

This was the other article which is about Auerbach. This story tells us about how he has been in the same studio since 1954 when the rent was only £2 a week, this shows how much time has changed but he is still creating work from the same place,
This has inspired me to always keep drawing, even if I it's disappointing because he said that most of the time he was disappointed by his work so he repeated the same piece of work until he was happy with it, This shows the determination he had.

7th October 2013
Today I have pushed my work further, this time I have added transparent material to the paper and I have layered it, I have also used paint, these need to be finished tomorrow.

This is the work I created in life class, I wanted to link it with my other work like I did last week, but I have changed it slightly so the pages aren't as busy and complicated, I have used different shapes to represent the life models body parts.

8th October 2013

Today I have created these lines by taking them from my work and I wanted to improve on them by being more confident so that they flow the way I want them to, I have also added colour to see if it would turn out successful , because I have already tried colour with the circles.
I have talked about the meaning behind my work to a tutor and what I need to work on, which is my sense of scale and I need to so research deeper meaning of space so that I can create meaningful work.

9th October 2013
Today I have been researching and trying to understand the space and music that a tutor says relates to my work. I have watched a youtube video of Kandinsky creating a piece of work and I think that he was listening to a piece of music while doing this. I now have a better idea of what kind of marks he makes when he is listening to music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8yk1Z1224o

I have also created this print which I feel links with this work and I think it has a spacey look to it.

14th Monday 2013

Today I have started a new technique which I found was successful, I am linking my work up with music, time and space so I have used a clock to help me do this, I stood around it and whilst listening to music I tied a piece of strong to a circle template and threw in onto a strip of paper according to the note I was listening to, I then drew the line and the Circle, I did this for every number on the clock by turning around to make a complete circle, I think that I could take this further by using different media, more paper and adding colour.

I have also created this during life class, I have used the same media and techniques as last week but this time I have focused more on the tone and tried to get it as accuarate as possible.

Tuesday 15th october

Today I have carried on the technique I was using yesterday but this time I have used all three circles at once and I have only turned around to face 12, 3, 6 and 9 on the clock instead of all the numbers as I didn't want it to be too complicated.

This time I have charcoal and chalk to create tone and I did this depending on how loud or long the note was on the music I was listening to, today I was just listening to what ever song was on the radio instead of listening to the composer that Kandinsky listened to which was Arnold Schoenberg. I feel that this is successful and I can develop it further by adding colour.

I have done that same thing again but this time I have added colour to it and I have linked it with previous work which I think looks successful.

Wednesday 16th October
Today I have experimented further by changing where I add the colour, I have used colour on the circles instead of the bars, I feel that this works and is successful.
I have also created prints from a collograph plate and I have rubbed graphite into it which added tone to the print.
This time I used coloured chalk as well as graphite, I then added red ink to see how it turned out.
The ink ended up spreading all around the print but I feel that it turned out successful.
This time I only used black ink and I applied it using a roller and this is how it turned out once I had printed it.
For this one I used a scalpel to scrape the coloured chalk and then I shook off the access and I took a print from it and this is how it turned out, I feel this is the most successful one I created because It has a spacey affect and it's something I hadn't tried before.

Thursday 17th October 2013
Today I have experimented further on my pieces of work which I am linking to time, space and music.
I have created this using the same techniques but this time I have followed exactly where the line of the string is going which I think creates a rhythm and looks like a sound wave. I wanted to take the black and white away from the work to see if this would look more successful. First I used different tones of blue , the darkest blue represented the sad feeling that I got from the music , and the lighter blue is the happier/relaxing mood I got from the piece of music. I did the same with the second one but this time using three different colours,
Red representing anger, orange representing happiness and blue representing sadness.

21st October 2013
Today I have carried on with what I have been doing recently but I have tried out different techniques, first I used different tones to represent the mood of the note I listening to instead of using colour and the second time I used colour but I have used a technique where I put water on the page and added paint to it to see where it runs to, I have filled in the circles instead of just having a line, I just wanted to experiment with different things to see which I feel is most successful.

22nd October 2013
Today I have tried to be more confident with the way I work instead of hesitating when I'm making a mark, I know I need to just do it instead of thinking about it too much, I have learned how to be confident in mixing the colours and creating pictoral space, I have also learned that I can make colours darker by using another colour instead of black.
I have created this piece aswell to practice being confident with the paintbrush, I wanted to link other parts of my work with it, which is why I have done a bar at the side of the paper.

23rd october 2013

Today I have looked at a website that I feel can help me with my project which is pieces of work that have been created using music, by looking at ways other people work it can help me with ideas to create my final piece.
Here is the link to the website.
http://notations21.net/

I also visited the Guardian website to research more into how other people create art through sound. i found some interesting work and I feel this has helped me with ideas.
Here is the link to the website.
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/07/graphic-music-scores-playing-pictures-tom-phillips

I also visited a website which was about Tom Phillips who is a composer and an artist. I looked at his worked and listened to the music that went with it which helped me understand how he works.
Here is the link to the website.

4th November 2013
Today I have sat through a presentation that two women created about a new project I will be doing about creating a piece of art to be put in public near bus stations and bus stops. I now have to think about what kind of work I can create.

I have also been in life class and drew a woman figure, I drew this from quite far away. I measured and marked as well so that I could get the proportion correct, I feel that this is a successful piece which I wasn't expecting because I haven't drawn in life class for a while.
Once I had finished the first one, I drew another one whilst I was stood in a different place, I also stood closer to the life model so that my drawing would be different and this is how it turned out.

6th November 2013

Here I have progressed further from previous work, I have used different colours this time, and I have tried a technique that I was using for print,
I have used the powder from pastels to sprinkle onto wet paint or if the paint was already dry, I used wax as the powder sticks to it. I like this piece as I have tried to create depth by using the different tones in colour and the different colour powder.

This is a close up picture of part of the piece, I did this to show the powder on the paint, and to show the depth.
I like this technique as it is spacey and I think the depth links in with my project as I am representing space, time and movement through music.

As a group we have created a proposal for our exhibition, this will help us create our individual proposals so that we know exactly what we need to do to have a successful exhibition.

7th November 2013

This is one of the pieces I have created today, I have used a pale purple background with different tones of blue and purple, I have done this because I feel that it suited the music I was listening to at the time which was quite slow and sad but it also had loud parts to it aswell which is why I have used some bigger circles, this some was called 'what now' by Rihanna.

This is the other piece I have done today which was inspired by the other piece I did first,
I wanted to make the composition less complicated to see if this was most successful, I have also done it on white paper instead of pale purple, I feel that this is successful but I also feel that the first piece I did is successful aswell.
I feel that I have made progress today because I have put more thought into the work, and I have thought more about the colours and the placement of the paint.
When I look at these pieces I can see rhythm in them.

11th November 2013

I created this composition because I have chosen this technique to do for the exhibition, I liked the way my other pieces flowed and this is why I want to re create them using colour and adding more techniques that I have learned.

This is another piece I created, this time using a different type of paper which was like tracing paper, I like how the wrinkles of the paper have papered when I have added the water onto it, I feel that this adds to the effect. This time I have put the line verticaly instead of horizontally to see if this changed the effect. I think that it does change the way you look at it because of the length and the position of the line.

This time I have carried on the first piece of work by moving the circle and the line further along the paper to create the effect of time and movement. I added white to the blue and I will add more white each time I create a new one, this will represent the changes through time.

This is my life class piece, I measured and marked so that I could get the drawing as accurate as possible.

12th November 2013
I have finished the third piece, this time adding more white to the blue and I have moved the circle further across so that when I put the pieces together , they will flow.
This is the last one, I have made the circle come off the page a bit. I have added more white to the blue aswell do this is the paler one.

I have tried this using two different colours instead of one, I have changed the composition slightly by having the line overlapping the circle to see if this looked more successful and I feel that it looks just as successful as my other compositions.

Here is all three of them together, this comes together as one big composition, this time I have created three instead if four. I can see the movement in this and the colours represent change trough time.

13th November 2013
I have been discussing and organising the exhibition with other people on my course who's work is also being put into the exhibition,
This was a task to try and get people together and make decisions as a team and help eachother choose the best pieces of work to put up, I feel good about organising this as think I am gaining confidence. I have learned that I can be a good team member and learn from others aswell while in the process of making important decisions.

15th November 2013

I have been helping organise and put up our own exhibition which I have realised needs lots of team work and effort put in or else it won't be successful.
I am happy with how it is looking so far and I feel that we will get this finished in time and it will be done to the best of outle ability.

18th November 2013

This is part of the exhibition which is my work, I think that these prints work week with the painting because they flow together nicely. It was a task to get everything up for the exhibition but with lots of team work and effort it was done in a professional way which makes it successful.

19th November 2013
We have been having a discussion as a class with our tutor about the presentation we are going to be giving, it has helped me with my confidence in doing this successfully. I have written notes from this and I have also wrote down notes of my own so that I can go off these whilst doing the presentation so that I know where I'm up to and what else I need to say.

20th November 2013
I have done a ten minute presentation about 'what is drawing' and I have linked if with the work that I have been doing throughout this project, I have talked about what drawing is to me , what I have learnt from it and why Iv taken it into a certain direction.

To sum up this project I am happy with how it has turned out and I feel that the exhibition was a big success, I think that the hard work and effort put into the exhibition and work throughout this project has payed off, I have learnt a lot about drawing and have figured out that there is much more to drawing than a pencil mark on a piece of paper, it can be expressed in so many different ways which is what I have been experimenting through my work. I have been inspired by artists such as John Hoyland and Wassily Kandinsky, they both use a range of colours and shapes in their work and I feel that my work related to the both of them. I have also been inspired by other students who work around me as we discuss our work with eachother and share ideas. I have learnt things during this project that I can take forward for the future and other projects, such as techniques I have used which I feel are successful, drawing techniques such as 'putting and object in a space' when I first started this project I didn't think like that, but after researching, experimenting and discussing ' what is drawing' I now see it in a different way and it can be interpreted how ever you want to because it is your own opinion. If I was to change anything I have done during this project I would just try and experiment more with ideas, techniques and media because I have learned that the more effort that is put in and the more you experiment, the more successful the end piece will turn out.
