FMP Proposal
I am using the theme ‘Human Trafficking’, also violence
and abuse of women. I watched a documentary about trafficking and it really
opened my eyes to what is happening in the world around me, I was very angry
and disturbed by it which has made me determined to get my opinion across. This
is an important topic for me as I feel that I can relate myself to it, from
being in high school I have noticed that girls such as myself are an easy
target to abuse, not necessarily sexually, but mentally which is also wrong.
Being abused, especially by males can be very upsetting for females as they are
seen as the most powerful sex, it takes all confidence away.
I would not like to be in the situation these girls are
in as some of them are as young as 9 years old, the way they are treated is
awful, visited by at least 10 males a day who are left to do and treat these
girls however they like which leaves them with no control and no meaning in life,
I think it is wrong how their childhood is taken away at such a young age, as
well as experiencing things nobody should ever have to experience. I hope I can
get my opinion across as sensibly as possible.
I have not just been influenced by the documentary which
was called ‘Ross Kemp-Extreme World’ I was also influenced by the film ‘Taken’
these have got their points across by using film and I want to do it a
different way by using art as it may interest different viewers. I have mainly
been influenced by Hannah Hoch and Michael Landy for the techniques and the way
they work. They both use collage and different found imagery which is what I
want to try and do successfully to make it as realistic as possible. Michael
Landy uses mechanical objects to replace different body parts which have
influenced me to use a similar technique in my work.
Another technique I will be using is taking different
magazines or newspapers such as, animal magazines, fashion magazines and male
magazines to collect the imagery and words that I need. Using magazines and
newspapers is another good way of recycling as I am going to be using old
magazines that would otherwise be thrown away. My starting point will be
experimenting with putting different imagery together, such as body parts from
humans and animals, also mechanical images. I will be using different
techniques of printing and painting, and then progress by taking the images
that are most successful and using them in my final development stages, which
will be creating prints to see which colours and compositions that are most
successful as well as deciding if I want to add a painted or mixed media canvas
to my final outcomes along with a series of prints.
My method of evaluation will be reflection on my blog and in
my work book, I will also have a daily diary on my blog as well as a written
evaluation at the end of the project both on my blog and as a word document.
18th March 2014
I have now made a start on my final major project for the first year of my HND course.
I want to carry on with the same title as I used for my previous project as I don't feel that I have done everything I can to do with 'human trafficking'.
To start off this project I have carried on taking body parts from girls out of magazines, pictures of animals and mechanical objects. This is to represent the girls that are taken and sold are drugged and changed into completely different people which in a way is turning them into robots as they cant do as they please and are controlled by men.
19th March 2014
Again I have been creating more of these girls, and today Iv started to scratch into a piece of plastic like I did in my previous project which I can now start to use for printing.
20th March 2014
I have thought of a different techinque to printing, I scanned one of my designs into the computer and programmed the laser cutter to scratch into wood, this saved me time as I could get on with other things whilst the laser cutter engraved the lines for me. It did a negative and positive of the design and these are the prints that I got from it.
24th March 2014
I have been to the dragons den green fund work shop all day today, this was to help us apply for funding for our end of year show which will be at the cross street studios, in standish. We have been given advice on how to be persuasive in our proposals and applications. This means we want our project to be as sustainable as possible as this is what the green fund is about.
Iv learnt that I need to plan what is needed to be done in my project so that I know what im doing and can keep on track with my work.
25th March 2014
Iv been creating more compositions by using different animal and human body parts as well as mechanical images. I like to use Indian ink as I can create a scratched technique by using a fountain pen tool and its like the effect that my prints have.
26th March 2014
I have been printing today using the images I have scratched into plastic, I have used the images I have been creating this week. I have used the etching ink and the normal printing ink on different paper to see which is most successful and for the etching ink I think cartridge paper is best, but for the other ink I think that the glossy paper works best.
27th March 2014
Again I have printed a lot more, iv experimented with compositions and colours to see which is most successful, and I feel the reds/pinks works best as it is a passionate/ angry colour and represents women which is relevant to my topic.
31st March 2014
Iv been looking at different ways that I can present my work as final pieces, iv scratched into a piece of plastic like I do for my prints, but then I added the Indian ink to the lines. I put the plastic over the top of a print and added words and a cut out image, I feel that this adds more interest because there is depth.
Throughout April 2014
I have carried on experimenting with this imagery by creating different prints and compositions, I created as many as possible so that I could have lots to work with and develop for my final pieces.
I have created a series of prints using different images that I scratched into another piece of plastic, this time using a different colour scheme to see which turned out most successful and so that I would have a variety of colours to choose from to take forward.

I then started to feel stuck about what else I could do to the experimentation regarding my prints, so then I had the idea to use the prints I already have to scan into the computer, I then scanned in some of my other original images that I created using collage which were simple. After doing that I used a technique that I have previously used during other projects, which is photoshopping images together, then adding different effects on them, this adds interest and looks more sophisticated and successful than just having prints. The above images are the final outcomes to my photoshop experimentation on in black and white and the other in colour, the colour piece is the one I used to show at the exhibition.
This is one side of the wall in the space that I work in, it is filled with images of things that influenced me, such as artists, magazines and articles.
The other part of my wall is full of prints and images I have created during the beginning of the project and the process throughout.
End of April/Beginning of May- last two weeks before the exhibition date.
Last parts of my progress towards the final outcome.
I wanted to take my work further so that I could have a more successful outcome that would be up to exhibition standard. I was sure that I wanted to create a canvas to put with my prints, and I had the idea that I would do a mixed media collage piece on canvas but wanted to experiment with other things as well as collage so I had more of a variety, which would add interest to my pieces as a whole. This is why I decided to do a painting piece on canvas instead. I took one of my images that I had created from doing collage and drew an outline onto a rectangular shapes canvas so that it would have more of a portrait affect.
First I chose the owl/woman, I started to simply fill in the gaps with colour that I had mixed using blue, red, yellow and white, this created a pastel affect. I then mixed the colours carefully and placed them in the parts of the canvas that I thought would look best. If the colour didn't look successful next to another I would simply overpaint it, this is one of the good things about acrylic on canvas, it is quite easy to go over mistakes.
The image on the right is the finished outcome to the first canvas I created, some changes needed to be done but that was done last minute once all of the work had been put up. I like how colourful this piece is, I wanted to get the effect of the hidden animal/human inside the painting so that it represents the human trafficked girls that are taken, because they are hidden away, as well as having their identity taken away from them.
Here is my second canvas, this time I chose the tiger/woman to draw onto the canvas, I also added the outline of the pig/woman which I have left white purposely as I feel that it adds a dramatic affect, again representing being hidden and having no identity. I found that in this piece the animal looks angry which is what I feel makes it successful as it shows the anger of the girls, their families and the anger I feel about the issue.
First week in May (Last week to finish work)
This is my third canvas, I drew out the image of the horse/woman I previously created, again adding another animal, in this case I used the giraffe which is in white for the same reasons as my last canvas, also because it links back to my prints as they have white figures on them as well.
I created 3 canvases that were the same size, so I wanted to challenge myself to paint on a bigger canvas, this time a square one. As this canvas is bigger, I drew out 3 different animals, monkey, owl and the cow, the owl is what I kept white. The other two are painted in colour, this took a lot more time to create and I felt as if it wouldn't be finished as it was the last week before putting up the show.
It did get finished eventually with more time put into it than the other 3 canvases. Looking at the 4 canvases I seemed to think that the smaller ones were more successful, maybe because the last one was more rushed or maybe because it is on a bigger scale. I think that if I was to do it again the size of the drawings on the last canvas would be bigger so that it balanced out the size of the canvas.
We have got together during the last week of working until the exhibition to have our photographs taken for our poster to advertise the show.
THE SHOW
These are my final pieces once they had been put up ready for the opening night of the exhibition.
I felt quite proud to see that my work was near the window so that people who walked past would be able to see it.
Planning and setting up the exhibition was a stressful but exciting experience as I felt that I had the independence to make decisions about which work goes up and where it goes with out having a professional tell me.
It was an easy process putting up and choosing where the work was going because me and my peers worked together as a team and it was all up within a day, the only things that needed doing was the explanations and names that was to go at the side of our work and tidying up.
In my opinion the show was a success and it was professional, there was food and drink for the guests and lots of people turned up to look at our work.
Overall I have enjoyed doing this project as I have been experimenting with new things such as collage, I thought that creating collages was fun because I could use my imagination and play around with different images. I also had fun doing this project because I chose a theme that I felt was important and I wanted to get my point across about how disturbed, upset and angry I am about human trafficking and it is a serious issue happening all around the world, something that shocks me is that it happens in this country as well. I am happy with my outcomes as I have learned a few things such as, I like working with paint and colour as well as collage, ink and print. I feel that my work can be successful whether it is at a small or big scale, as long as I put my mind to it and push myself, the outcome can be what ever I want it to be.
If I was to carry on or do this project all over again I would try and push myself to experiment more with the techniques i'v used and also new ones so that I have a better chance of getting a more successful outcome. I would also do more research into human trafficking and think of other ways to create an outcome so that it has more thought behind it.
